OP-ED: Have you ever been asked where you’re from only to get a laugh or curious look after revealing you’re from Illinois?
The Land of Lincoln shouldn’t be a laughingstock – it should lead the nation.
We have the best people and the best location of any state in the nation. What we don’t have is the right governor to lead us back to prosperity. It’s time for a change.
Whether you think Governor Pat Quinn is a typical machine politician or you think he’s just a nice guy who is completely over his skis, most will agree on one thing – he’s the wrong governor for Illinois.
Corruption, incompetence and mismanagement have become synonymous with Illinois state government.
And it’s all too embarrassing.
Under Pat Quinn, income tax rates went up, property taxes went up, and college tuition costs went up.
What went down?
Job opportunities, school funding, and our collective sense of hope.
We’re going in the wrong direction. And Pat Quinn’s answer is more of the same for the next four years – starting with a massive income tax hike right after the election during the lame duck session. That’s plainly a bad idea for families and small businesses — both of which Illinois is losing in droves.
So what will make the hemorrhaging of people and businesses stop? A new leader with a pro-growth plan to revive Illinois.
There’s a reason why nearly every newspaper across Illinois has endorsed Bruce Rauner.
We need a new direction.
Bruce has the experience and vision to bring back Illinois and restore the Land of Lincoln to its rightful place as the economic engine of the Midwest.
Bruce has committed to rolling back the Quinn-Madigan tax hike from 5 to 3 percent over four years. He’ll push for a property tax freeze; no property tax hike without voter approval. He’ll advance a series of pro-growth reforms to attract business back to Illinois and create new high-paying jobs. He’ll make education spending a state priority and work to give our kids the world-class schools they deserve. He won’t take a salary and he won’t take a pension. And, most importantly for me, he’ll bring a breath of fresh air to our state that’s seen far too many politicians go to jail.
Bruce is an outsider – a businessman – who will bring a refreshing perspective to Springfield. He’s “nobody nobody sent”, as he likes to say – and that means he can’t be bought, bribed or intimidated. And he’s also fond of saying another refreshing refrain: “If you don’t like what I’m doing in four years, throw me out.”
That’s putting it all out there in no uncertain terms.
For me it comes down to down to the old cliché – are you better off than you were four years ago? On every count – income taxes, property taxes, education, jobs, corruption – we are worse off today than we were four years ago. And that’s saying something after Governor Rod Blagojevich.
Pat Quinn’s had his opportunity and has failed the people of Illinois. Electing him to another four years would fall somewhere between irresponsible and insane.
Bruce Rauner has a plan to restore our state. For Illinois, for a change, let’s give him that chance.
State Rep. Ron Sandack (R-Downers Grove)
