Poll: Kirk, Rauner Earn Dismal Job Approval Ratings from Voters

(Chicago) – A new PPP poll confirms findings of earlier Illinois Observer surveys that reveal both U.S. Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL) and Gov. Bruce Rauner are struggling with deep unpopularity.

Public Policy Polling’s newest Illinois survey finds that Kirk’s job approval rating sits at just 25% and his disapproval stands at 42%.

In February, a PPP poll showed that only 28% of voters approved of the job he was doing to 32% who disapproved.

As a result of his slumping job approval numbers, U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) leads Kirk 42–36% or 7 points in a 2016 head to head contest, according to the July 20-21 survey of 931 voters.

A June 23 Ogden & Fry survey of 598 likely 2016 Illinois voters commissioned by The Illinois Observer‘s e-newsletter, The Insider, found that Duckworth led Kirk 43.8-27.3% or 16.5 points.

Additionally, the new PPP survey shows that Duckworth is also the overwhelming favorite in the Democratic primary, leading Andrea Zopp 59-10%. That includes a 57-13% advantage for Duckworth with African American primary voters.

However, a Kirk- Zopp contest would hand Kirk the lead, 38-29% or 15 points.

According to a May 16 Ogden & Fry poll of 1,051 Democratic primary voters commissioned by The Illinois Observer Duckworth also cleaned Zopp’s clock, leading 50.8–5.2%.

In addition to Kirk’s dismal numbers, the PPP survey shows Rauner’s job approval rating is, like Kirk’s – upside down. The poll finds that only 37% of voters approve of the job he’s doing now to 43% who disapprove.

A poll commissioned last month by The Illinois Observer revealed essentially the same numbers on Rauner’s job approval.

A June 20 survey conducted by Ogden & Fry for The Illinois Observer, the only polling firm which correctly predicted Rauner’s five-point victory margin over Governor Pat Quinn, found that just 35.7% of voters approve of the way the governor is handling his job while 46.7% disapprove or net approval of minus 11 points.

Despite some political pundits dismissing the Ogden & Fry polls commissioned by The Illinois Observer, the new PPP survey confirms what our subscribers have known for a while, Illinois’ top GOP leaders are in a heap of political trouble.
