(Chicago) – Insider: On the last day to file for Illinois’ March 18, 2014 primary, a rush of unknown GOP candidates submitted petitions for governor, U.S. senator, and the state legislature.
For governor, Peter Edwards Jones of Franklin Park submitted petitions on Monday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. without a lt. governor running mate, becoming the fifth Republican to join the GOP gubernatorial contest.
Additionally, the Chicago Republican Party announced yesterday that it had filed petitions for 18 candidates in 16 districts for the Illinois General Assembly, including a challenger to Senate President John Cullerton, attorney Stephanie Linares. In fact, the Chicago GOP has even managed to ignite a primary contest among its newbies.
Earlier this year, the Chicago GOP launched an on-line marketing campaign to find elusive Chicago Republicans to pass petitions for the legislature, eliciting 146 people who responded to the ads.
“Many Chicago Democrats will face a Republican opponent for the first time in their careers,” said Chicago GOP spokesman Chris Cleveland. “We’re prepared to mount a fully-funded legal defense of our candidates.”
If any of the candidates fall to petition challenges, Cleveland said, “[W]e’re prepared to re-slate them in the spring.”
The Chicago GOP will hold a press conference early next week to introduce the candidates. Full bios and other candidate information will be released later this week.
